Indonesia has a new geopark or earth park, namely the Ujung Kulon National Park (TNUK) located in Sumur District, Pandeglang Regency, Banten.
The determination of TN Ujung Kulon as a Geopark is stated in the Decree (SK) of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia Number: 393.K / GL.01 / MEM.G / 2023 concerning the Determination of the Ujung Kulon National Geopark on November 10, 2023.
“The development of the geopark area focuses on the implementation of conservation, education and sustainable economic functions,” explained Deri Dariawan, Acting Head of the Banten ESDM Service, in his official statement, written on Wednesday, (11/22).
A geopark is a geographical area that has a geological heritage and geological diversity of high value. Within the geopark there is biodiversity and cultural diversity that are united, which are developed with three main pillars, namely conservation, education and local economic development.
Ujung Kulon National Park is a habitat for various endemic and exotic Indonesian animals, one of which is the one-horned rhinoceros, which only exists in Ujung Kulon.
The Ujung Kulon Geopark area also has a geological heritage related to biodiversity and cultural diversity.
The Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources explains that based on the assessment of the verification team, the Ujung Kulon Geopark has met the administrative and technical requirements to be designated as an earth park.
The delineation map of the Ujung Kulon National Geopark area consists of 14 geological heritage sites (geosites), six biodiversity sites and two cultural diversity sites. The Ujung Kulon Geopark takes the main theme of the Krakatau Tsunami trail, with an area of 1,245.66 square kilometers.
“Later after two years, an evaluation will be carried out to then be able to submit it to become a world geopark by proposing it through UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGG),” he explained.
Ujung Kulon National Park covers eight sub-districts in Pandeglang Regency, including the sub-districts of Carita, Labuan, Pagelaran, Sukaresmi, Panimbang, Cigeulis, Cimanggu, and Sumur.
